Brahmos: Supersonic Cruise Missile

MEANING
The name BRAHMOS is a joint name comprised of "Brahmaputra"(Indian river) and "Moskva"(Russian river) developed by both India and Russia.


STAGES 
Brahmos Missile is a 2 level supersonic cruise missile with a strong  propellant booster engine as its first level which provides it the supersonic speed and separates after that.The liquid ramjet on other level takes the missile closer to speed of 2.8 to 3 Mach in cruise phase.


FEATURES
The Brahmos missile has a flight range upto 290 km with a max supersonic speed of 3Mach and can carry conventional warheads weighing upto 200 to 300 kg. It operates on the principle of "fire and forget" which means after the target location input,the missile sharply reaches the target with a very fast speed.The main features of this missile are
  • High supersonic speed
  • Difficult to catch on radar systems
  • Sharp accuracy on target
Brahmos missile can be targeted through Air,water and land which makes it a better weapon performing multiple roles in all types of surroundings. 


COMPARISON
The brahmos missile as compared to other supersonic cruise missiles  at present is having
  • 3 times more velocity
  • 2.5 to 3 times more flight range
  • 3 to 4 times more seeker range
  • 9 times more kinetic energy 
The missile is presently in service with Indian navy and the air version of brahmos is active in Indian air force presently used in SU-30 MKI.
